Being a largely rural population, many of the most classic objects in Sardinia, Italy, are tools that are directly linked to the agropastoral lifestyle.

Additionally, they were often homemade, from materials readily available on the island. A perfect example is the bankitu de ortigu, a sort of stool that would be made by layering raw cork bark in a simple geometric crossover.

These stools were lightweight, durable and versatile, perfect for bringing along when taking the sheep out to pasture or for picking olives.

Maddalena Casadei was inspired by the simplicity of their construction to create the Accanta collection, a trio of small stools/tables that can be kept near at hand for myriad uses. She chose to work with a chunky compressed cork, left 100% natural with no lacquer or varnish.

Casadei worked with Falegnameria Pisu, a family-run woodworking shop in Cagliari who created the specific extra-dense waste cork blocks that the tables are made from. The name Accanta (nearby in Sardinian) references both the versatility of the pieces, and the presence of cork trees within the island landscape.
